"The Jewish Tinwhistle"
Do you know songs like, Hevenu Shalom Alechem, Rezele, Sher, Kandel's Hora,
Araber Tantz, Zemer Atik, S'brent, Eliyahu Hanavi and others? What do they have in common?
Jewish songs in a Jewish Scale. The Ahava Rabba Scale (mode or Freygish)
Forget about Do, Re, Mi - Unless you like intensive half-holing.
The Ahava-Rabba Tinwhistle makes this easy.
Note: We can also adapt headjoints of many other whistles to Ahava Rabba mode tonebodies.
A normal Tinwhistle in the key of 'D' has six toneholes to play the major scale: D, E, F#, G, A, B, C#, D
The Ahava-Rabba Tinwhistle plays: D, Eb, F#, G, A, Bb, C, D Many songs descend below the 'D' note, therefore a 7th hole was added to make a 'C' bell note, thus making the scale: C, D, Eb, F#, G, A, Bb, C, D
Ahava Rabba mode is used by many cultures with different names: Mela Vakulabharanam, Alhijaz, Raga Jogiya, Vativasantabhairavi, Maqam Humayun, Hitzaz, Dorico Flamenco, Harmonic Major inverse, Phrygian Dominant |
Check it out! What happens when you mix a little Klezmer in Ahava Rabba mode with a little jazz. Gary Gould of Huntington Beach has done just that, an infusion of Jazz and Klezmer nicely come together making the very interesting version of Bei Mir Bist Du Shen. I recommend checking out Gary's Website. |
